Very often when as fresh school passouts we move out starry eyed into the world of pseudo brand adults trying to cope with a new occupation of being a university student, we face complex conflicts within ourselves on our own ‘STAND’ in the crowd. Many of us have faced hair-splitting conflicts on our own self identities and I am sure with all the readers out there who have just toddled their way up recently to the University are no exceptions either.
Through this opportunity to write an interactive column every month, this time we bring you a collage of what people think “being thyself” is.
Just as Shakespeare puts it “all the world's a stage and we are but actors”, this is an attempt to brings you what gets people (moreso students) ticking when we asked them what "being thyself" is:
A certain Trisha believes that being thyself is all about “carving her own identity whether she makes choices that are bigger or the ones that are ‘trivial’”, she believes that both make a lot of difference.
When we asked her about the need of role-models, she said “well you don’t need to be like anyone and don’t have to really look for a role-model for yourself”.
Another
Shobhita, a third year (Eng Hons) student from DU believes individuality is akin to “being something out of the ordinary and something versatile”. She believes in Role models and has quite a number of them to look up to.
The survey became a bit more interesting when the same questions were asked to a Senior Branch Manager of a leading corporate firm. Well she too wishes to be anonymous and for her individuality became more feminist in nature as she related the term to liberation of the mind, soul and body.
The idea extended itself to the professional realm as well and she believes in the thought that one should root themselves to simplicity and not try and maneuver another's way.It might seem scary to some people out there but, well her role model is Osama bin laden.
The above responses put up a gamut of thoughts to us where one could almost end up losing their own definitions about individuality.
However, this is (merely) the first attempt from our side to get you thinking and scratch a little bit of your head (not literally) on such subjects which revolve not only around the campus life in general but the human psyche at large.
Your responses will also be encouraged at- thestandpoint@gmail.com
